Voices: Memories of Kampong Lorong Buangkok
An exciting theatrical collaboration between GroundZ-0 and Let’s Go Tour Singapore! As you explore the kampong, you will meet characters with intriguing personal stories and better understand their relationship with the village.

Site Specific | Promenade Model | Participatory Theatre | Heritage Trail | Walking Tour

In the olden days, news was spread through word of mouth, carnivals took place at the backyards, and entertainment often started with the burning sound of kerosene lamps. Step into the village we have recreated and be transported into a magical world where time has stood still.

Meet Rolland, a long time resident of Kampong Lorong Buangkok, where he will take you to explore the flora and fauna in the village. You will then get to meet Kak Rosnah and listen as she shares the cacophony of sounds in her daily life. Get ready for a special appearance afterwards by songstress Lily, and let her serenade you with melodious pop classics!

This special production combines the expertise of professional theatrical practitioners and local tour guides. Through compelling storytelling and personalised facilitation, we hope to bring to you an unforgettable theatrical experience that is emotive yet educational.

Conservation vs Progress | Ephemeral | Culture | Traditions | Transmission

The tour explores the theme of Ephemeral (when is the exact essence of a fleeting moment?), Culture (what defines us as Singaporeans?), Traditions (Oral, Written, or Practiced, where did these come from?), and Transmission (How would the next generation make sense of the world we pass on to them?).

Rolland’s Kampong :
What defines a “Village”? Rolland often wonders about the simplest definitions, such as “Home”, such as “Progress”, such as “Life”. He is a very hospitable man, and delights in hearing tales of adventures that his visitors brings to him. But, as he introduces the villagers, there may be a little air of uncertainty that weighs on Rolland, which makes him frown when he is reminded of the rapid evolution of the country.

Kak Rosnah’s Kitchen :
Managing all her household matters, Kak Rosnah is a “Kampong Makcik” who knows every detail of a kampong lifestyle. Albeit slow to open up, she has a wealth of knowledge to blabber on when she feels comfortable. Listen to her stories, her gossips, and her perception of the world. You will hear about traditional practices inherited from generations ago, and also how she interprets folklores amongst the villagers. Indeed a chatterbox full of wisdom, sometimes perhaps beyond her own comprehension.

Lily’s Guesthouse :
“Life is lived Forward”, the motto of Lily. She yearns to be the best version of who she can be. She is not afraid to take the leap of faith to venture into uncharted waters. She often shares tales of the glitters and glamours that the Golden Era of Singapore’s entertainment scene possesses, and aspires to lead people around her towards greater heights… But, some crumbs of the past tend to haunt her now and then.
