Overview/Highlights
The idea of a national garden in Singapore started in 1822 and it was only in 1859 that the Gardens was founded at its present site and became an important botanical institute even up till today. With more than 160 years of history, it holds a unique and significant place in the history of Singapore and the region. It became Singapore’s 1st UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2015, being the first and only tropical botanic garden on the UNESCO’s World Heritage List. It is also the first botanic gardens in Asia and the third in the world following Orto botanico di Padova in Italy and the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew in UK. Today, it is managed by the National Parks Board of Singapore.
